Abstract

Kashmir remains one of the world's most militarized areas of dispute, which has been in the grips of an armed insurgency against India since the late 1980s. In existing scholarship, ideas of territoriality, state sovereignty, and national security have dominated the nationalist discourses on the Kashmir conflict. This book, in contrast, places Kashmir and Kashmiris at the centre of historical debate and investigates a broad range of sources to illuminate a century of political players and social structures in contested Kashmir and to reveal Kashmiris' myriad imaginings of 'freedom,' transcending the borders of the nation-states between which the region is partitioned. It contends that the colonial constructs of territorial nationalism and non-negotiable sovereignty have failed to provide stable political structures on the South Asian subcontinent. Instead, the trauma of partition continues to unfold in Kashmir as Kashmiris struggle for dignity and peace.

Abstract

The advent of Islam in medieval Kashmir gave birth to a narrative that describes forcible mass conversion of Hindus, eviction of local people and wanton demolition of religious symbols. A minority of Kashmiri Brahmans and their progeny who did not convert to Islam built and successfully perpetuated this narrative over the centuries. Following the eruption of armed insurgency in Kashmir and mass migration of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990, this community narrative has turned into the Indian mainstream view on Kashmiri Pandits.

Abstract

Kashmir as a Borderland: The Politics of Space and Belonging across the Line of Control examines the Kashmir dispute from both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and within the theoretical frame of border studies. It draws on the experiences of those living in these territories such as divided families, traders, cultural and social activists. Kashmir is a borderland, that is, a context for spatial transformations, where the resulting interactions can be read as a process of 'becoming' rather than of 'being'. The analysis of this borderland shows how the conflict is manifested in territory, in specific locations with a geopolitical meaning, evidencing the discrepancy between 'representation' and the 'living'. The author puts forward the concept of belonging as a useful category for investigating more inclusive political spaces.
